SUDEM Final Conference Presented Project Results, Curriculum and Policy Recommendations

On 6 March 2026, the SUDEM – Sustainable Disaster and Emergency Management Processes Digitization project was presented at a final conference held at the BTA National Press Club in Sofia. The event highlighted the project’s main outcomes and demonstrated how SUDEM contributes to the digital transformation of disaster and emergency management through higher education, lifelong learning, and interdisciplinary cooperation.

During the conference, the project consortium presented the overall SUDEM framework for improving disaster and emergency management preparedness through digitalisation, artificial intelligence, monitoring systems, and smart process management. Special attention was given to the growing need for integrated digital approaches in response to climate-related, anthropogenic, and infrastructure-related risks, as well as the need for better coordination between institutions involved in disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.

The project team reported that SUDEM has produced a package of 13 educational modules and training materials designed for disaster and emergency management at regional and international levels. The curriculum addresses key topics such as disaster monitoring, data-driven decision-making, AI, IoT, resilience, and emergency coordination. The courses are intended to support both higher education and lifelong learning, helping to prepare a new generation of specialists with strong digital and interdisciplinary competences.

The conference also presented the project’s policy recommendations package, which proposes the wider introduction of digital systems and technologies for improving preparedness, environmental and critical infrastructure monitoring, and emergency management coordination across Europe. In addition, partners shared examples of specific contributions developed within the project, including educational modules on AI-supported disaster risk management, IoT for disaster response, nuclear and radiation safety, and sensor- and drone-based approaches for fire detection, survivor localisation, and infrastructure damage assessment.

The event formed part of the final meeting of the international SUDEM consortium, bringing together representatives of partner institutions from Bulgaria, Germany, the Netherlands, Ukraine, and Türkiye. The conference underlined the strategic relevance of SUDEM for building more resilient, digitally enabled disaster management systems and for strengthening European cooperation in this field.

The SUDEM project is implemented under Erasmus+ KA220-HED and runs until 30 April 2026.
