Research results from the Erasmus+ KA220 project SUDEM – Sustainable Disaster and Emergency Management Processes Digitization were presented at the Twenty-first International Scientific Conference “Space, Ecology, Safety (SES 2025)”, held in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 21 to 25 October 2025.
The conference paper, entitled “The SUDEM Approach: Advanced Air Mobility Emergency Operations Based on Future Advanced Communication Systems – As Crucial Elements of a System of Systems for Effective Disaster Management”, highlighted the project’s vision for the future digital transformation of disaster and emergency management.
The presentation demonstrated how Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), Advanced Communication Systems (ACS), Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), and the Internet of Things (IoT) can be integrated into a comprehensive System of Systems (SoS) architecture to improve disaster preparedness, situational awareness, emergency response, and coordination between multiple stakeholders.
The paper also presented the results of the SUDEM Foresight Study, one of the project’s core methodological components. The foresight analysis identifies emerging technological trends, future challenges, and educational priorities that form the basis for the development of the SUDEM interdisciplinary curriculum, digital learning environment, and knowledge transfer model. Particular attention was given to artificial intelligence, remote sensing, data fusion, decision-support systems, and innovative educational approaches preparing future professionals for increasingly complex disaster scenarios.
The research demonstrates how international cooperation between higher education institutions, research organisations, and industry partners can contribute to developing sustainable educational frameworks supporting the digitalisation of disaster and emergency management across Europe.
The paper was authored by Georgi Georgiev, Mehmet Akşit, Dimo Zafirov, Petar Lulchev, Axel Sikora, and Lechosław Tomaszewski, representing partner organisations from Germany, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Poland, and Türkiye.
The presentation at SES 2025 contributed to the international dissemination of the SUDEM project’s scientific results and promoted discussion on the role of advanced communication technologies, unmanned systems, and digital education in building more resilient disaster management systems.
