The scientific results of the Erasmus+ KA220 project SUDEM – Sustainable Disaster and Emergency Management Processes Digitalisation were presented at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2025, one of the world’s largest international conferences in the Earth, environmental, and geosciences. The conference was held in Vienna, Austria, from 27 April to 2 May 2025.
The consortium presented the paper entitled “A Foresight Study on Sustainable Disaster and Emergency Management SUDEM Processes Digitalisation: The European Higher Education and Life-Long Learning Perspective”, highlighting one of the project’s core scientific achievements.
The paper presents the results of the SUDEM Foresight Study, which serves as a fundamental methodological component of the project. The foresight analysis identifies future technological trends, emerging challenges, and educational needs in disaster and emergency management, providing the foundation for the development of the SUDEM interdisciplinary curriculum and knowledge transfer model.
The research demonstrates how modern digital technologies—including artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), remote sensing, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), data fusion, decision-support systems, and data science—can support the digital transformation of disaster management throughout the entire disaster lifecycle. Based on the foresight analysis, the project proposes future development scenarios, educational priorities, system architectures, and policy recommendations that contribute to more resilient and sustainable disaster management practices.
The presented work also emphasises the importance of international collaboration in higher education and lifelong learning. By combining expertise from universities, research institutes, and industry partners across Europe, the SUDEM consortium is developing an innovative multidisciplinary educational framework that prepares future professionals to address increasingly complex disaster and emergency situations using advanced digital technologies.
The paper was authored by Georgi Georgiev, Mehmet Akşit, Anatoliy Sachenko, Pavlo Bykovyy, Oleh Zachko, Dmytro Kobylkin, Dimo Zafirov, and Axel Sikora, representing partner institutions from Germany, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Germany.
The presentation at EGU General Assembly 2025 contributed to the international dissemination of SUDEM research results and strengthened the project’s visibility within the global scientific community working on disaster resilience, digital transformation, and sustainable emergency management.
